Kilrush
is a coastal town in Country Clare. It is
located near the mouth of the River Shannon in the
southwest of the country. It is a town of
great historical interest, being one of the
listed heritage towns of Ireland.
Kilrush
is one of the main locations for those wishing to
view the large group of bottlenose dolphins that
live in the Shannon Estuary. This school of
breeding dolphins is unique to Ireland and is the
most accessible group of dolphins in
Europe.
Vandeleur
Walled Garden, once the forgotten garden of Kilrush
House, has now been redesigned for the 21st century
around the old path system and specialises in many
unusual and tender plants that thrive in the area's
uniquely western latitude climate.
Scattery
Island, named after the mythical monster of the
island, was the location of a monastic settlement
founded by St Senan. Now uninhabited there are
many ruins on the island including those of seven
churches, a unique 10th century round tower and a
holy well which is said to have healing
powers. Ferries to the island are available
all year round, weather permitting.
Seven
miles from Kilrush is the Greg Norman designed links
golf course at Doonbeg, quickly gaining a reputation
as one of the most demanding and spectacular courses
in Western Europe.
Facilities for golfing, sailing and horseriding are all available locally and other attractions in the vicinity include fine beaches at Kilkee and Miltown Malbay, boat trips on the River Shannon, and a wealth of historic remains: ruined Abbey's, Round Towers, ring forts and dolmens.
