The market town of Alton is 18 miles north east of Winchester.  The town includes several fine Georgian buildings and an historic church.  there are many attractions and museums in the area including: 

A major tourist and leisure attraction, formerly part of Britain's national rail network The Watercress Line is a heritage steam railway and is now operated by dedicated volunteers for the enjoyment of all.

The Curtis Museum is named after William Curtis, the botanist. The gallery has a superb display of decorative arts, a small walled garden and a coffee shop. Across the road in the museum, the fascinating story of the local area may be seen. It has earned the enviable title of "the small museum with the big reputation".

The house where Jane Austen wrote her famous novels, including Pride and Prejudice, is at Chawton and has now been turned into a museum.
