Tolpuddle
is a village on the River Trent (or Piddle), 7 miles
north east of Dorchester. It is a lovely
village of thatched houses and cottages, and has a
church with Norman remains.
These
days it is famous for being the birthplace of the
Tolpuddle Martyrs, when six farm workers, who tried
to establish a trade union, were transported to
Australia. The Tolpuddle
Martyrs Museum tells their story.
Every summer, thousands of people come from all over the world to the annual Tolpuddle Martyrs' Festival, which is held in July.
